Ported VR30DDTT intake manifold for a Q50 3.0T intake upgrade

Q50 3.0T Intake Upgrades: What to Do First on a VR30DDTT Build

The VR30DDTT responds well to modifications, but the order you do them in matters. Doing parts in the right order means each one has room to work, and you take the intake apart once instead of twice.

This guide covers the intake side of a Q50 or Q60 3.0T build. Turbo, fuel and transmission upgrades are their own topics; talk to your tuner about those.

1. Start with a tune

A tune is where most VR30 builds begin, and it's what lets the ECU use the airflow you add later. Pick a tuner you trust before you buy hard parts, because they'll be adjusting for every change that follows.

2. Intake and charge piping

Upgraded intakes and charge pipes are common next steps. They let the turbos breathe more easily and deliver air to the throttle bodies with fewer restrictions.

3. Ported throttle bodies

Once more air is coming through the charge pipes, the two factory throttle bodies are the next pinch point. Our ported VR30DDTT throttle bodies are opened up approximately 1–2mm, polished inside, and ceramic painted outside in the color you choose. See the throttle body guide for details.

4. Ported plenum and intake manifold

After the throttle bodies, air goes through the plenum and then the intake manifold into the heads. Both are factory plastic parts with restrictions we can open up:

  • The ported plenum has its lower runners ported approximately 3mm and its throttle body openings enlarged approximately 2mm, to match bigger throttle bodies.
  • The ported intake manifold has its runners opened up approximately 3mm, closer to the size of the head ports.

The manifold and plenum package is the best value if you're doing both. Because the throttle bodies come off when the plenum does, many owners do steps 3 and 4 at the same time to save labor.

5. Re-tune

After the intake work, go back to your tuner so they can adjust for the added airflow. Ported parts work best when the tune matches them.

Common questions

Are ported parts worth it on a stock VR30?

Ported intake parts make the biggest difference on modified, tuned cars, where the factory parts are more of a limit. On a stock car, start with the tune.

Ported plastic manifold or billet?

Billet manifolds cost much more. Porting keeps the factory part, fitment and sensors, and removes restrictions for a fraction of the price. Read the full comparison in our VR30DDTT manifold and plenum guide.

Do you paint the manifold and plenum?

No. On the 3.0T they're plastic, so they keep their factory finish. Only the throttle bodies are ceramic painted.

Will this fit my car?

These parts fit the 2016–2026 Q50 3.0T and 2017–2024 Q60 3.0T, including Red Sport 400. If you have a 3.7, see which engine is in my Q50 or Q60.
