VQ35DE, VQ35HR, or VQ37VHR? How to Tell Which Engine You Have

VQ35DE, VQ35HR, or VQ37VHR? How to Tell Which Engine You Have

This is the question we get asked more than almost any other: "Which engine do I have?"

It matters because parts for these engines look similar but aren't interchangeable. Valve covers, plenums, and manifolds for a VQ35DE won't fit a VQ35HR or VQ37VHR, and the reverse is true too. Ordering the wrong one is the most common mistake we see.

The short version

  • VQ35DE: The earlier 3.5L, found in early 350Z and G35 models, as well as the FX35 and M35.
  • VQ35HR: The later 3.5L, found in some 2007-2008 350Z and G35 models.
  • VQ37VHR: The 3.7L, found in the G37 and 370Z.

The year ranges overlap in the middle, and that's where people get tripped up, especially on 2007 G35s. The same model year can have different engines depending on body style.

How to know for sure

  1. Check your VIN. Enter it into a decoder. Most will list the engine.
  2. Look at the engine itself. The intake plenum and valve covers look different between the DE and HR/VHR families. If you're not sure what you're seeing, a photo is enough for us to tell you.
  3. Check the service manual or parts catalog for your exact year and trim.
  4. Email us. Send a photo of your engine bay and your VIN to Info@initiatemotorsport.com. We'd rather answer one email than process a return.
